Americans such as muself either think of a Geisha as a Japanese prostitute or as an entertainer or more of a social gathering type performer beng trained in dancing, singing and playing instruments. The correct definition is the second with the first coming from misconceptions from after the WWII occupation. There is actually a lovely website on Geisha here [link] if your interested in reading more.
This piece was done because I wanted to do something with an asian feel, something a little softer yet hopefully where you can tell the lady has some character. I realize the hair and skin textures are not quite right, as well as she should technically have a kimono on, but I don't own quite the right props. Hopefully everyone else will enjoy viewing this as much as I have.

beautiful. You're right, I'd never quite gotten what a geisha was until I read the book, "memoirs of a geisha" and even then I wondered about them. I'd wanted to do something like this forever but I didn't feel I knew enough about the culture to try.
Thanks for the great link and what a beautiful picture you've made!
Thank you! I wanted to include the site link to go with my explanation since both ideas are out there. I must admit I don't know a ton about Japanese culture but they are a very cultured and elegant people.
A brand new monthly article which showcases some of deviantART's finest equine artists, as well as recognizing the lesser-known but equally talented ones. Interviews, helpful tutorials and features can all be found here too! I hope you enjoy it.
The idea of this contest is to set you up completely blind with a mythical being - from any world culture - and turn you loose to come up with a deviation based around it!
Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it. Each day we will feature 10 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
When it comes to community spirit, `Rushy is a shining example. From participating in devmeets, to providing positive encouragement to other artists, `Rushy can always be found demonstrating what it really takes to be a true deviant. It's without any hesitation that we are delighted to award the Deviousness Award for July 2009 to `RushyRead More
